Jean-Jacques Lemêtre ist Klangkünstler, Sammler und Erfinder außergewöhnlicher Instrumente. Seit vielen Jahren Musiker am berühmten Théâtre du Soleil in Paris, komponierte er zuletzt die Theatermusik für das Stück Heinrich Heines Le Grand für das Düsseldorfer THEATER DER KLÄNGE.
In dieser besonderen Konzert-Performance Musicalopithèque präsentiert er über 130 einzigartige Instrumente aus Holz, Ton, Metall, Leder und Pflanzen – jedes einzelne ein Kunstwerk, inspiriert von der Natur und alten Kulturen weltweit. Manche sammelte er auf Reisen, andere baute er selbst.
Lemêtre versteht seine Kunst als Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt: Die Natur ist für ihn Klangquelle, Widerstand und Erinnerung zugleich. Seine musikalische Zeitreise führt von der Steinzeit über das Mittelalter bis zu den Klangwelten der Azteken, Afrikas und Asiens – ein faszinierender Bogen durch Zeit und Kulturen.
Das Konzert wird zur poetischen Hommage an die Natur und einem stillen Ruf in unserer lauten Welt, die oft vergisst zuzuhören.
Als Musiker, Komponist und Instrumentenbauer hat Jean-Jacques Lemêtre bislang 2800 Instrumente aller Epochen aus aller Welt gesammelt, die er oft auch selbst modifiziert. Er arbeitete mit diesen Instrumenten u. a. für Zirkus, Kabarett, Film und Tanz. 2012 führte er seine Oper Babel mit über 1800 aufgenommenen Sprachen und Dialekten statt Orchesterinstrumenten auf – ein einzigartiges visuelles und klangliches Gesamtkunstwerk.
Lemêtre betont die ursprüngliche Einheit von Theater, Tanz und Musik. Seine Kompositionen entstehen dramaturgisch integriert, ohne starre Taktstrukturen. Als „fliegender Teppich“ für die Performer folgt er ihren Körpern und gibt gleichzeitig Impulse – eine symbiotische Live-Beziehung jenseits bloßer Illustration.

In this exceptional concert performance, Musicalopithèque, he presents over 130 unique instruments made of wood, clay, metal, leather, and plants—each a work of art inspired by nature and ancient cultures from around the world. Some he collected during his travels, while others he created himself.
Lemêtre views his art as an exploration of the world: for him, nature serves as a source of sound, resistance, and memory simultaneously. His musical journey through time transports us from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages and on to the soundscapes of the Aztecs, Africa, and Asia—a captivating arc through time and cultures.

As a musician, composer, and instrument maker, Jean-Jacques Lemêtre has collected 2,800 instruments from various eras and regions worldwide, many of which he has modified himself. He has utilized these instruments in circus, cabaret, film, and dance, among other endeavors. In 2012, he performed his opera Babel, featuring over 1,800 recorded languages and dialects, rather than traditional orchestral instruments—a unique visual and auditory work of art.
Lemêtre emphasizes the original unity of theater, dance, and music. His compositions are dramaturgically integrated, without rigid rhythmic structures. Like a “flying carpet” for the performers, he follows their bodily movements and simultaneously provides impulses—a symbiotic live relationship that transcends mere illustration.
