Als der Film 2016 entsteht, ist all dies noch nicht vorauszusehen: Mit neun Jahren beschließen die Zwillinge Bill und Tom Kaulitz aus Magdeburg berühmt zu werden. Mit zwölf Jahren gründen sie gemeinsam mit Gustav Schäfer und Georg Listing eine Band, die ab 2005 unter dem Namen Tokio Hotel die Welt erobert. Sie werden bestaunt, belächelt, gehasst und verehrt. Der Erfolg ist gigantisch: Platin in 68 Ländern, ausverkaufte Konzerte und der androgyne Bill wird zur Stilikone.
Mit Anfang zwanzig dann die Vollbremsung: Die Zwillinge fliehen- reich und berühmt – im Privatjet nach Los Angeles und lassen Tausende von begeisterten Fans und ein Leben hinter Schutzmauern hinter sich. Sie möchten ihre Freiheit zurück … und wissen zunächst nicht, wie und ob es weitergeht.
In dieser Verschnaufpause trifft Oliver Schwabe die Band. Er begleitet Bill und Tom durch einsame Wüsten Kaliforniens und Gustav und Georg an die Ufer der Elbe. Er begleitet die Band auf Tour in Frankreich, Deutschland, Russland und Mexiko, wenn auch damals in kleineren Venues, und ist im Studio bei der Albumproduktion dabei.
In intimen Interviews sprechen Bill, Tom, Gustav und Georg über den Preis des Erfolgs, die Unzertrennlichkeit der Zwillinge, über Liebe, Sexualität, Heimat, und Musik. Unbeirrt verfolgt die Band, die schon alles erlebt hat, ihren in der Kindheit begonnenen Traum weiter und das Popmärchen Tokio Hotel geht in die nächste Runde.

When the film was made in 2016, none of this was yet foreseeable: at the age of nine, twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz from Magdeburg decided they wanted to become famous. At age twelve, together with Gustav Schäfer and Georg Listing, they form a band to conquer the world starting in 2005 under the name Tokio Hotel. They are admired, mocked, hated, and adored. Their success is massive: platinum in 68 countries, sold-out concerts, and the androgynous Bill becomes a style icon.
Then, in their early twenties, a sudden halt: the twins – rich and famous – flee in a private jet to Los Angeles, leaving behind thousands of enthusiastic fans and a life behind protective walls. They want their freedom back… and at first don’t know how or if things will continue.
During this break, Oliver Schwabe meets up with the band. He accompanies Bill and Tom through the lonely deserts of California and Gustav and Georg to the banks of the Elbe. He joins the band on tour in France, Germany, Russia, and Mexico – in smaller venues back then – and is present in the studio during the album’s production.
In intimate interviews, Bill, Tom, Gustav, and Georg talk about the price of success, the twins’ inseparable bond, love, sexuality, home, and music. Undeterred, the band – which has already experienced it all – continues to pursue the dream that began in their childhood, and the Tokio Hotel pop fairy tale enters its next chapter.
