Resistance, perseverance, tenderness – that’s what it’s all about. The female* body is subject to a range of patriarchal power structures and is often exposed to various forms of violence in both private and public spaces. Women’s* anger about this is still socially taboo and often repressed or framed as hysterical or unfeminine. Anger often gives rise to a desire for more visibility. It can connect, inspire and create self-empowering moments and find expression in art.
The way we deal with art and how we understand it enables us to penetrate social structures, point out grievances and make a desire for change tangible. In collectivity, we can transform our anger into healing processes. This allows us to give female* anger space, to make it tangible as a productive force and to heal the pain that patriarchal structures cause.
For my master’s project, I spoke to 14 different artists who all come from very different artistic fields. The pieces by Annika Kahrs, Donna Volta Newmen, Mia Oberländer, Aslı Özçelik, Nina Paszkowski, Matilde Søes Rasmussen, Ola Rebisz, Marleen Rothaus, Lea Schütze, Tatjana Stürmer, Hoda Tawakol, Theresa Weber, Zoe Williams and Klara Charlotte Zeitz are shown in the book. The anger in their works may not always be recognisable at first glance, but they are united by the desire to share spaces of experience through art, to make anger and ambivalence visible and to be able to feel healing.
“Unfolding Fractious Material” is a book about emancipation and the struggle for self-determination, independence, liberation and self-empowerment and about the fact that this is also a painful process tat is worthwhile. It is about care, visualisation and healing. A play of sensuality and brutality.
